APRIL 2023mom
and i
mom and i is a study of familial relationships, lost histories, cultural memory, and maternal connection, through the fabrication of those things using technology, artificial intelligence, and the internet.

The collage is comprised of early diffusion-stage images generated with prompts like “mother”, “father”, or the names of my family members. These returned blurry and unrealized images that often seemed to attempt at imitating 3 main themes: Firstly, the Korean geographic landscape, and second, traditional patterns or fabrics. But thirdly, these images just as often included images that imitated war, or military, without any mention of the words. In line in significance, and shown adjacent with physical geography and traditional fabric was militarization in this cultural consciousness. These images make up the bodies of the figures, and contribute to their depth and compelxity. Yet the two still partake in the exchange of a flower, one thing that my grandmother remembers about her childhood:

“There wasn’t really anything. We would go up the mountain to go around cutting wildflowers (진날래꽃: wildflowers (jin-dal-lae-kkot)) We would talk amongst our friends...There wasn’t anything very special”
